The flayed skin the figure is holding is copied from Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, which is on the back wall of the Sistine Chapel. Although it depicts the skin of St. Bartholomew, it is believed that it is also a self-portrait. Michelangelo was deeply conflicted about his faith and soul late in his life.
