Leaving Positano, Italy for Capri

Fantastic - reminds me of hot days and cold Limoncello! Back in 2006 my wife and I did a walking tour of the Amalfi coast which is a great way to see this beautiful area (and avoid a lot of the traditional tourist bus-rides).

Amalfi was our first stop (via ferry from Naples), and the first day was a beautiful hike up into the coastal hills. Lemon groves and vineyards everywhere. As I recall, our first day was a hike up to Ravello and back. Ravello is also amazingly scenic, and has a quirky history, strangely including Wagnerian opera festivals in the summer.

After that, the walking tour arrangement is simple. They book a different hotel for each day of the hike, and take care of delivering luggage to the next hotel down the coast (using the tourist buses). They supply an itinerary and trail map (with a few suggested routes and sites, depending on your ambitions). After breakfast, we'd load up day-packs, put on hiking shoes, and start walking! The trails were often a good climb up into the hills. We had great views of the coast, met hikers and local farmers, and found interesting grottoes to explore. When the weather was bad (we had one rainy day), you just take a bus to the next town to stay on schedule.

The hike took us to the scenic coastal towns of Praiano, Positano, and (in our case) ending in Sorrento (and then a day trip to Capri/Anacapri). We capped that off with a day hiking around Pompeii. Truly the best vacation experience I've ever had, and I can't recommend it enough.

It was also fun to be here in 2006, as Italy won the world cup during our stay (although it was very hard to find the hotel desk clerk the next morning - and by morning, I mean 10 a.m. :) )
