Hi there. In this food post, I try out Kaka Sushi in Toronto.
I actually think of the Brazilian football player Kaka when I think of Kaka Sushi in Toronto. It is located at Bay Street and Elm Street near the Eaton Centre downtown Toronto mall. They do offer all you can eat (AYCE) sushi.
From Monday to Thursdays their Adult AYCE price per person is 41.95 CAD. Add 2 dollars more if it is on a Friday, Weekend or Holiday. This price is not too bad given that AYCE barbeque places are priced at 50 CAD or maybe more.
My brother and I made reservations for 5PM. They did not have reservations for 6PM or 7PM. The next possible reservation was 9PM.
Our waiter mentioned scanning a QR code to access the menu. Paper order slips and a pencil are provided on the table for ordering. Each order may be one item or a plate of food.
There is a two hour limit. You can order your last items of food before the last 30 minutes.
What makes this AYCE place interesting is the existence of having handrolls prepared for you tableside. One staff member comes around with a cart (Chinese dimsum style) asking if you would like a handroll. Mine was a Bluefin Tuna handroll.
If you wanted more handrolls, you call this cart guy again. Alternatively, you can write handroll on the paper order slip.
My handroll was okay. Not awful but not amazing. Sorry for bad picture after I took a bite.
Here is what we ordered for our first round. A lot of Aburi sushi, special rolls and a Sushi taco.
Do note that a lot of the sushi here has sauce on it. My brother noticed this and did not like this too much.
When it comes to the sushi taco, the shell is not a taco sushi. It is more of a crispy cracker shell. This item was not very good in my opinion. A slight disappointment.
The large plate dish was Hamachi Tataki. It is Chili Kombu in House Ponzu sauce with truffle mayonaise and pickle. I thought this one was really good.
The other items we ordered included:
The fried items were okay and the miso soup arrived really fast.
When it comes to the skewers, the AAA grade beef skewers were good but it was sauce heavy. The Lamb skewers in my opinion were superb. I thought this was one of the best items on their menu. It was a surprise to see skewers as an option at this place. Maybe the staff have a mix of Japanese and Chinese personnel.
We were getting full and decided to not have too much dessert. For me, I did not want to risk stomach problems on the train ride back.
The small thing is a chocolate truffle. It was good.
Our second dessert item was a Vanilla Crème Brûlée. This one was good as well.
My rating for Kaka Sushi is 8 out of 10. A 6 out of 10 was from my brother.
My brother found this place kind of disappointing. A good handful of items had too much sauce for his liking. For the Chicken Karrage, it would have been better to have sauce on the side. The Chicken Katsu cutlet had way too much sauce.
A lot of their speciality sushi rolls had sauce on it.
Due to stomach capacity, we did not order from their Teppanyaki section. No grilled meats eaten so we cannot comment on those.
I do agree that a lot of their items had a bit too much sauce. There were some sushi rolls that an interesting fruity like sweet flavour in their sauce. I liked that. My favourite items were the Hamachi Tataki in a large plate and the lamb skewers. Skewers on the menu was interesting.
Tableside hand rolls service was interesting. However, the Bluefin Tunahand roll I had was plain in taste. At least there was not too much sauce!
Service was friendly and good overall. After ordering your food, the speed of the orders was very fast.
I thought Kaka Sushi was good and maybe I do a revisit. My brother was more critical and found it disappointing. To him, it was not awful but he would prefer a different place and pay a little more at a place like Gyu-Kaku BBQ or Taisho Japanese Grill.
