Text: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife and they shall be one flesh.” Gen 2:24
I want to spend some days this beginning of the new month to talk to you about marriage. I’m too sure that this will be a blessing to everyone single or married. I want to begin by making a statement that you need to read carefully and meditate upon.
“Marriage is not an achievement; but an assignment.” When you hear young people talk about marriage their mind is majorly on the wedding ceremony. The cloths they will wear; the guests that will attend and the place where the honeymoon will take place. That could be a great achievement. But marriage is far bigger than that.
What makes a great student is not the amount of school fees paid; but the degree of commitment to make a success of the academic process. Strangely the examinations that qualify students for the university are the same irrespective of what fees a student paid in school. What makes a great marriage is not the flamboyancy of the wedding or the amount of dowry paid. What makes a great marriage is not the physical beauty of the couples involved. What makes a great marriage is the level of commitment of the individual couples to make a success of their marriage. The demands of a great marriage are the same for every couple irrespective of the kind of wedding that took place.
Another appropriate word for marriage is “responsibility.” This is actually where the rubber meets the road. Taking a child to a good school and paying the fees will make no sense if the child is not ready to sit down to learn, read and write examinations. Marriage is good only if the individuals involved are ready to accept the full responsibility and pay the price required. See you tomorrow!
