Monomad Challenge Inside Exeter Cathedral in black and white

While not as large or famous as some Cathedrals Exeter is quite unique the 14 century stone vaulted roof is the longest in the world and a real testament to the craftsmen all those century’s ago.

Among recent renovations have been the regilding of the bosses where the spans join blackened over the years by candles and oil lamps.

There are 3 organs in the Cathedral but grand organ built in 1665 by local organ builder John Loosemore is a masterpiece of the art containing over 4000 pipes in it’s ornate design.

The Tomb of 14th century knight Hugh Courtenay the 2nd Earl of Devon and his wife make an excellent monochrome subject.

There is so much detail in the 800 year old stone carving.

Every inch the Medieval Knight.

I’m never sure if this is a Lion or ugly dog. The big pipes in the back ground are the low notes from the grand organ, they will turn your insides to jelly.

I’m still not convinced stained glass works in Monochrome but I’ll keep trying. Has any one got any tips?

The early Medieval astronomical clock has the earth at the centre with the sun and moon rotating around it at that was the belief at the time.

Is this the oldest cat door in the UK or the world? According to Cathedral records in 1598 a carpenter was paid 8 pence to cut a hole in the door to allow the bishops cat to catch mice that were feeding on the animal fat used to grease the clock. The cat got 13 pence a quarter too for it’s upkeep which is also recorded.
