I want to tell you a little about the Guatemalan quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) being the national bird of Guatemala, it is geographically distributed by Mexico, northern Guatemala, and Central America, There are two recognized subspecies. The word quetzal comes from the Nahuatl quetzalli. It translates as a long tail of shiny feathers.
It is distributed from the east of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (it is a geographical region located between the states of Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco, and Chiapas), in southern Mexico to western Panama, including the central area of Guatemala, throughout Honduras, East of El Salvador, north of Nicaragua and center of Costa Rica. The plumage of the body is green, with reflections that vary from gold to blue-violet, with the chest and belly of an intense crimson red color. The tail feathers are green and very long, the male has a bristling crest on the head. These birds feed mainly on fruit although they mix that diet with insects.
Last weekend I was in Teotihuacán knowing the house of the sun and the moon, in the citadel the temple to Quetzalcóatl or the feathered serpent that is one of the most important gods of Mesoamerican culture was found and this gave me the idea of want to paint and know a little more about this bird.

Les quiero hablar un poco de El quetzal guatemalteco (Pharomachrus mocinno) siendo el ave nacional de Guatemala, se distribuye geográficamente por México, norte de Guatemala y centro América, Se distinguen dos subespecies reconocidas. La palabra quetzal viene del náhuatl quetzalli. Se traduce como cola larga de plumas brillantes.
Se distribuye desde el oriente del Istmo de Tehuantepec (es una región geográfica localizada entre los estados de Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco y Chiapas), en el sur de México hasta el oeste de Panamá, incluidos la zona centro de Guatemala, en todo Honduras, Oriente de El Salvador, norte de Nicaragua y centro de Costa Rica. El plumaje del cuerpo es de color verde, con reflejos que varían de oro hasta azul-violeta, con el pecho y vientre de color rojo carmesí intenso. Las plumas de la cola son verdes y muy largas, el macho tiene una cresta erizada en la cabeza. Estas aves se alimentan principalmente de fruta aunque mezclan esa dieta con insectos.
El fin de semana pasado estuve en Teotihuacán conociendo la casa del sol y la luna, en la ciudadela se encontraba el templo a Quetzalcóatl o la serpiente emplumada que es uno de los dioses más importantes de la cultura mesoamericana y esto me dio a la idea de querer pintar y saber un poco más de esta ave.
