I used to see all kinds of anime character merch, like Crayon Shin-chan, being sold at night market stalls. When I asked the vendors about the price, I was always surprised at how cheap it was. But after taking a closer look, I often found the quality to be pretty bad, so I figured they were probably knockoffs. Still, if the quality was good, I probably would've bought some.

Not long ago, I was wandering around a cultural park and stumbled upon a limited-time pop-up store selling "cute and healing" products. That sounded super vague, so I had to check it out to see what they actually had. Turns out, most of the stuff in the store was licensed merch, but I had never heard of a lot of the brands before. One of them was mofusand, which, according to the product descriptions, is a series by the Japanese illustrator Juno featuring cute cats. They mostly had small lifestyle goods, and honestly, they looked pretty nice—the kind of stuff girls would like. Another brand there was Lovely Friends, which also had animal-themed merch, but to me, it just didn’t seem as appealing.

Among all the brands in the store, the only one I really recognized was Crayon Shin-chan. It's been around forever and is super popular. I still remember all of Shin-chan’s mischievous antics in the anime—they really leave an impression. The best part? Pretty much everything in the store was 50% off! It was obvious the store was trying to clear out stock quickly. Of course, I wasn’t about to miss out on such a great deal, so I jumped into the crowd and grabbed a few Crayon Shin-chan items for myself.

These days, people care more about intellectual property rights, so you don’t see as many shady vendors selling fake goods. Pop-up stores seem to have become more common recently, and they mostly sell official, limited-edition licensed products. I usually just come across them randomly while walking around, like that New Jeans pop-up store I mentioned before. The chances of finding something you really love at a pop-up store are pretty low, so I was super lucky this time—I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to snag these great finds!
