I think when most people picture a hedgehog, they imagine a round little body covered in tiny sharp spines. Hedgehogs look a bit cool, but they're also incredibly adorable. Now, imagine mixing them with fruit! The whole vibe instantly becomes much cuter and more relaxing. Designers let their imagination run wild by turning the hedgehog's spikes into strawberry seeds, pineapple leaves, grape clusters, and all kinds of fruity details. It's such an unexpected combination, but somehow it works perfectly. Besides the cute appearance, each character also has its own personality. Some are shy, some are food lovers, and some dream of traveling the world. That's exactly what Fruit Hedgehog is all about—a blind box designer toy series created by the Taiwanese art toy brand Jinart.
The Durian Hedgehog is one of the most popular characters in the Fruit Hedgehog series. It's a collaboration between Jinart and the design team AKUTOY. I guess Jinart was one of the event organizers, which is probably why they held a Durian Hedgehog custom exhibition. Designers and artists were invited to reinterpret the character in their own creative styles, and all of the customized pieces were displayed together on a special exhibition wall.
That said, quite a few of the custom versions simply changed the color scheme without really altering the design, so they didn't feel very original. For example, one tropical-themed Durian Hedgehog used bright summer blue colors, along with palm trees and a coconut drink to express the artist's idea. It looked nice, but the design itself was mostly the same. On the other hand, some creations really stood out. My favorite was a Durian Hedgehog dressed in full samurai armor. Its spiky body was hidden beneath the armor, making it look completely different from the rest. Among so many figures that were obviously still just Durian Hedgehogs, this one really caught my attention. I heard visitors could vote for their favorite custom design, but after walking around the whole exhibition, I never saw any staff promoting or guiding people to the voting area.
Then I stumbled upon something that made me do a double take. Wait... are they actually selling dragon eggs? Did I see that right? I looked closer and thought, "These just look like rocks"! I remembered reading a comic where someone mistook dinosaur poop for dinosaur eggs, so I even wondered if these were supposed to be fossilized dinosaur droppings! But then I noticed the prices. A 4.5-inch "dragon egg" cost NT$3,600, while a 5-inch one was NT$4,000. Real dinosaur eggs are extinct, so there's no way they'd be that cheap, or that many of them! Of course, I couldn't resist asking the vendor. It turned out the "dragon eggs" weren't dinosaur eggs at all. They were rough crystal stones. Visitors could pick one they liked and then experience the surprise of discovering the crystal hidden inside. So the whole "dragon egg" idea was really just a clever marketing gimmick. Once I found out the truth, I honestly lost most of my interest. Still, I have to admit... it was a pretty smart way to catch people's attention!
