Dagang Bridge was honestly one of the biggest surprises of my recent trip. At first glance, it just looks like a regular white bridge—110 meters long, wide enough for about 550 people and bikes to cross at the same time. It was built to make getting between the Pier-2 Art Center and Warehouse No. 2 a lot faster—what used to be a 30-minute trip now only takes 5 minutes, which is super convenient for tourists hopping between attractions.
But what really drew me in was the fact that it’s a horizontal swing bridge. I read online that when the bridge opens for its rotation show, crowds gather to watch. The show happens every day at 3 PM, and again at 7 PM on weekends (Friday to Sunday). The bridge slowly rotates 90 degrees to music, and it's pretty spectacular—people stop to take pictures, and the whole vibe is just really unique. That’s exactly why I made a point to go on a day when I could catch the rotation in person.
But wow—Kaohsiung’s sun is no joke! Even though I was mentally prepared, it was still way too hot for me. As it got closer to 3 PM, I saw people start gathering in the shade, all waiting for the show. The crowd got bigger and bigger as the time approached. About five minutes before the rotation, staff members cleared the bridge—no one was allowed to cross during the movement. The whole spin lasted around three minutes, and once it was done, I climbed up the spiral staircase in the center of the bridge. From there, I got an up-close look at the bridge’s structure and had a fantastic view of Kaohsiung Harbor. I even spotted some local landmarks like the 85 Sky Tower and the Kaohsiung Music Center.
Honestly, the bridge looks beautiful from both far away and up close—pure white and sleek. But I mainly came to see it rotate. There are tons of bridges in the world, but very few that swing open like this. Once I checked that off my list, I headed back to the Pier-2 Art Center or sometimes I just crossed the bridge to explore the shops on the other side. A quick rest, then back to adventuring!
