The Kovuk / Windbreaker (The Paper-Skin Shell)
The Kovuk is a vital piece of gear for a scout operating in the tundra that is heavy with minerals.
Material Composition: Cured salt lichen membrane.
Derived from the massive lichens that colonize the petrified stumps.
Harvest & Processing:
- The Peel: Harvested in whole sheets using an axe to pull the membrane away from the mineralized bark. The lichens are gigantic here compared to real world lichens.
- The Weld: Seams are created by overlapping wetted edges and applying heat from a hearth stone fusing the membrane with no need for thread or sewing
- Pressing: The raw plant matter is hammered with smooth stones to compress the fibers into a dense sheet.
Functional Utility:
- Defense: The hardened surface deflects sharp mineral grit carried by the winds.
- Stealth: The brittle Kovuk remains rigid. It vibrates at a high frequency masking the scout's movement.
- The Hem: The fractured edges are not decorative; they shred wind turbulence and break up the wearer's silhouette against the petrified forest.
