Greetings to all friends of Hive! See you again here, this time I want to dedicate this post to the San Martin Palace, one of the most splendid palaces of the city, which I decided to visit its exteriors during the week. However I want to clarify that this work will have two parts being this the first one where I will talk according to its facade and exteriors.
I had the initiative to request a guided tour inside this palace and I also had the good news and opportunity to be accepted to access in the coming days, so I intend to do two parts, talking in the second post about the interior design and more in depth details of what is inside this beautiful architecture.
One of the main methods to access the palace is through the subway, getting off at the San Martin station of line C, which takes us to the square that bears the same name where this great palace is located, which is the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The neighborhood in which it is located is the Retiro district.
The San Martin Palace was originally called Anchorena Palace because it was designed especially for this family to commemorate the centenary of the independence of Argentina. The construction and design was the work of the architect Alejandro Christophersen, starting in 1905 and finishing its construction in 1909, characterized by a fine arts style.
Several years later around 1930 it was taken over by the government changing its name to San Martin Palace and becoming the ministry it is today.
The building has a strong influence of French classicism and gives the impression that it is a single structure when inside it is divided into three houses where it highlights a large hall of honor and a beautiful dome.
The most outstanding and mentioned architectural details of this palace take place in its interior where there are works of art of recognized national and American artists which we will mention in the second part as I mentioned before.
The building is a strong influence of Beaux Arts architecture, highlighted as most of the buildings of the time by the use of materials such as plaster simile stone and crafts brought from France were the elements that gave this architectural style that called the city as the Paris of South America. In 1910 it was declared the best façade of the time and was also declared a national historic monument.
In the second part I will be mentioning a lot about its interior design and other relevant details such as its facilities, the works of art housed in the palace, the gardens, the halls, wall designs, domes and many other important parts of this building. I recommend you to follow this thread as it will be very interesting.
Without further to add, I hope you enjoyed it and I look forward to reading you also in the continuation of the great San Martin Palace.
Happy day and have a great weekend.☀️
