What's the point of being a location independent worker ('digital nomad') if you don't get out and enjoy the local cities you are living in? It's one of the perks of the job: the freedom to take a long walk and work from any cafe that catches your eye.

In my case, I don't want to be carrying around a $1,000+ laptop. I'd feel worried about getting robbed or making myself a target, which kindof defeats the goal of feeling free! What happens if you decide to meet a friend at the last minute and want to go for a few pints? My solution is a really cheap setup, in total less than $75 USD, so if I get robbed or leave it in the corner of a cafe it's not the end of the world. It's small and light, so I can wrap it all up in an unassuming bag that just looks like I'm on the way to the grocery store.

My Set Up: Total Cost - $72 USD

I have:

  • Kindle Fire HD - from Amazon, costs around 拢30/ $38 USD in the UK. It just comes with the Amazon store but you can manually download the APKs to have the full Google Play library.
  • LG Bluetooth Rollable Keyboard - this is an excellent quality keyboard which rolls up into a straight stick (another photo with it rolled out below). It costs around 拢25/ $32 USD in the UK (amazon link). It has a couple of prongs that stick out to put your tablet, but the viewing angle is not great if you are tall, I usually make a makeshift stand with whatever's on the table.
  • Cheap Neoprene case. You can usually pick these up for 拢1 or 拢2 at a cheap store - we call them 'pound stores' in the UK, or from Amazon/eBay.
  • The esteem app - free on google play, useful for checking out Steemit on the go.

I usually try to do all my hard-core work on my laptop in the morning, then just leave the writing to do on this set up.
