This will be my last post about the 17 Wall project. Last year I was in Aarhus and quite by chance came across themurals inspired by the global goals nr. 13,14 and 17. It was not before some weeks afterwards that I found out about the project. When I was back in May this year, I deliberately walked around to find all of the murals. My small «project« is now completed.
Those who are behind the project has had a purpose. They invited artists to paint mural that illustrate each of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in order to make the goals accessible to everyone. The founders have a belief about art being able to inspire in a way that words can't. Because the SDGs affects the intire globe, the founders had invited artist from different countries.
This painting is inspired by Global Goal nr.12 «Responsible Consumption and Production».
« Fra jord til bord»
(
From farm to table)
Artist: Malakkai, Spain
Another huge, beautifull mural where the intention is make us more aware of how we can enjoy what is more near us. We have become accustomed to having easy access to almost anything. Once we could only eat strawberries when it was the season. That goes for a lot of other produces. Years ago an orange were rare, but now we can get them all year. If we want to make a diffence towars sustainability, a good places to start is by buing local produse and seasonal products, instead of wanting products from far away or from another season. By becoming part of cycle of nature again, we can contribute to making a huge difference.
The artist Isaac Malakkai is an illustrator and street artist born in southern Spain. He has always liked to draw, but it was in 1999, he became aware of graffiti.Since then, he began to focus on street art and at the same time interrupted his studies. His inspiration comes from the earthy colors found in his hometown. His works often have a touch of either melancholy or irony. One of the main ingredients in what he creates is the female figure and surrealism. He gets the colors from the desert and he paints with focus on the details. His work can be seen in several countries, spread throughout the world from Mexico to China, South Africa, and several European countries.

«The Arches of Piece»
Artist: Monkey Bird Crew,France
The artists behind this painting have taken as their starting point an illustration from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed by the UN in 1948. There are many details and symbols on the institutional aspect. For example, the constitutional monarchy with the "fleur-de-lysé mantle, that releases a citizen who is in chains. To the lefte side the figure with wings symbolises freedom on the rights of the citizens. There is also a snake biting its own tail ( making a circle) which might be interpreted as the eternal validity of the rights stated in the declaration. The two figures in the middle represent knowledge and guardians of a universal heritage. In the background we see a library, where all knowledge is made available.
Two French artists make up Monkey Bird Crew. Together they have been creative since 2010. Their work consists of collages, spray paint, drawings, screen printing, etc. They are inspired by art nouveau and religious paintings. They like to work with antique doors, abandoned industrial buildings and old walls. What they see as their mission is to transcribe social themes to walls using symbolism and animal totems. What we often see as a theme in their art, is the presence of animals in urban invironments. The bird symbolizes the yearning for liberty, while the Monkey is the embodiment of the material obsession of humanity. As we see in this mural, the Bird and the Monkey are both are present and coexisting. Ever since the two started working together, they have become known all over the world. Temor is the «monkey» and Blow is the «bird».
This is end of story about the project. An amazing initiative. A good day in Aarhus that I might repeat.
