I still have some of the murals from the Project 17 Walls left to show you, so this week I will continue with street art from Aarhus. This series of 17 images has challenged artists from all over the world to interpret the SDGs. I spend a day in Aarhus in May this year and looked up the 14 murals I didn't see when I was there in October last year.
Those who are behind the project has had a purpose. They invited artists to paint mural that illustrate each of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in order to make the goals accessible to everyone. The founders have a belief about art being able to inspire in a way that words can't. Because the SDGs affects the intire globe, the founders had invited artist from different countries.

«Life on the edge»,
Artist: Mantra
In his interpretation of the tenth global goal, the artist has chosen to focus on what he believes to be the biggest challenge: reducing inequalities towards lifte that is not considered as human. He has divided the mural into three parts. The many dead butterflies represents what is already lost. That's one side. The other side is represented by only one butterfly. That's what is left. Despite all the lost biomass, life is still heavier that death. Humanity, represented in the scales, has put a great deal of presure on the entire world's eco-system. But, our hands are holding the keys to turn around this situation.
Mantra or Youri Cansell was born in 1987 in France. He is someone who has been painting street art for almost 20 years. Originally he wanted to be a naturalist. He has said that while growing up he spent a lot of time in nature. He studied the small living creatures he found. He drew and painted them. He is known for painting beautiful butterflies. He himself believes that being a naturalist and a painter have a lot in common. Both require a good eye for detail and the willingness to immerse yourself in a simple task for hours. His works can be seen in Europe and on the American continent.

«Balance»
Artist: Hans Krull & Peter Birk
This mural is about the city, nature and mankind. The artists haven't said much about how they interpret the world goal they were asigned. They have left the interpretation up to everyone looking at the painting. What is clear in any case, is the element of balance. People experience art differently. That is why they do not want to give directions by explaining.
These two artists are different in age. Krull was born in 1952. He is a well-known graphic artist, painter and sculptor, educated at the Aarhus Academy of Fine Arts. Birk was born in 1985, a self-taught artist from the graffiti scene. Both are well-known Danish artists, who are both two productive artists, together, but also separately. Despite the differences in age and background, they complement each other when they collaborate on a creative level.

«Overcast»
Artist: Bogdan Scutaru, Romania.
This is a huge, gorgeos mural painted by Bogdan Scutaru. The motif shows us how European forests are being destroyed by European companies. Some of the last untouched forests in Europe were cut down, but under false pretenses. The young girl standing on the recently cut tree represents youth and their need to express anti-consumer mentality. The face shown above is intended to help us imagine a different future. The fact that there is a storm above us is shown by the gloomy, dark sky. But there are also some bright rays on the young girl. The influence of the light source is there, even if we do not see it directly.
Scutaru was born in a small town in eastern Romania. He grew up among the ruins of communism. There were many of them. He liked to draw and used, among other things, the walls of former railway stations and abandoned factories. He became interested in murals and, like so many others, he also started with graffiti. He has no formal education in art, but I think we can see from this painting, he is certainly a talented artist. He is known for his detailed drawings and photorealistic talent. He has contributed murals to several countries in Europe. This mural has become one of my favourites among the 17 pieces..
