Since I moved to this island, I have always been interested in knowing the whys in everything. The whys in people for the most part, like "why are they doing what they are doing?", "why do they behave this way?", "why are they doing this to me?", and so forth. I know it sounds absurd because I should know the answers right? I am from here too. But being born and raised in the city, and having the individualist ideals of modern society, I didn't understand anything about island life. I didn't even know anyone here. All I know was that this is a beautiful region with amazing nature. A perfect place to start my dream. I thought I can handle it. So, I moved without a clue of what I was getting into. Alone.
Over the years, trying to understand the reasons has become too exhausting, let alone working and living with people from here. To be honest, every day of my life has become a battle. There's always something to trigger my anxiety and rage. But I know I can't change anything. All I can do is to understand. Or better yet, move away. If I plan on saving my sanity and what remains.
Anyway, I've compiled and rephrased some of the traits I've got somewhere in the internet. The list says that these are the common traits of those people with low IQ. And in society, low IQ and lack of education are usually the root causes of poverty and crimes. But just to be clear, I think IQ is more like native intelligence. Something you are born with. So you can have some education but still with a low IQ. If that makes sense.
So here are some of their common traits:
Their lives are so present-focused. They find it hard to see beyond the moment. They don't care about the past nor plan for the future. They don't think further than tomorrow.
And because they can't plan for the future, they are very bad with money. If you give them a lot of money today, they will most likely go shopping without care, gamble, spend it on alcohol with their friends and waste everything away.
If you look at their social media profiles, they can describe themselves as "simple man", "simple woman". (Prove me if I am wrong, maybe there are intelligent people out there who are not too complex? Ha ha.)
They tend to be religious? (Okay not necessarily, I know some people who are intelligent yet religious too)
Since they can't see beyond the moment, they tend to act based on impulse. This probably explains why we have murder crimes here (due to family and land conflict, infidelity, heated argument during a party or drinking session).
They are very social and have a "tribal mentality". They tend to group-think. They need to be with allies in order to feel strong and conquer an enemy.
They thrive on modesty. They see people who are confident as "conceited". They are overly pleasant and agreeable - which make them judgmental too.
They like to show off by being fashionable. They like to have the latest gadgets even if they can't afford it. They are status-conscious.
They begin their sexual lives very early. Since they find it hard to plan ahead, they tend to have more children. Teen pregnancy and single parenthood are higher amongst them.
They easily fall prey to get-rich-quick scams, MLMs, mortgage loans and predatory credit.
As someone who has fully immersed and lived her life amongst them, and understands "this culture" more than anyone else here, I found most of these traits on this list are true. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I am better in any way or anything, I can also have any of these traits. I don't have a genius IQ or something. And I am pretty aware that I can be just as dumb (knowing your own restrictions or deficiencies is a common trait too). I guess all I wanna say is that this is probably the root cause of my "people problems" around here. And seeing through people might help me be more cautious with my words and actions.
