People say that a child would rather live in poverty and have the parent with them, then live with plenty and have lost their parent, but I don't believe this is true

Reminds me of batman. Life is kind of harsh when you lose parents while having good time. That is painful if parents are lost while there is no bond. I don't think there is much pain.
