If you are doing it only because you want to, perhaps it isn't for you

Or doing it because parents wanted it or society around you shaming you for being single or you are feeling lonely. lol. I feel the marriage should happen when other person knows you have to maintain the space and they have their own space and neither of you trying to push domination on each other and only your kids demanding that from you till they leave the nest. That's how I see it.

Surprisingly keeping pets is not an easy choice for people who change places like me, I wish I could keep dog, especially black lab but changed too many cities. It's just something I have kept as a todo for old age now.
