En esta foto, se capturó mi primera visita al zoológico de la ciudad después de más de una década, la imagen me fue tomada justo al entrar y la verdad es que el estado del lugar me dejó perplejo.
In this photo, my first visit to the city zoo in more than a decade was captured. The image was taken just as I entered and the truth is that the state of the place left me perplexed.
En mi adolescencia, solía visitarlo con frecuencia. Recuerdo que quedaba cerca del consultorio dermatológico donde acudía, cada vez que tenía cita y la sala de espera estaba abarrotada de personas aprovechaba para dar un paseo por el zoológico para distraerme un rato. Eran otros tiempos, pero ya en ese entonces se notaba el deterioro de las condiciones de vida de los animales, muchos habían muerto y otros sobrevivían gracias a la comida que les llevaban los visitantes. A pesar de la situación, era agradable caminar por el parque y respirar aire fresco ya que esa zona específica de la ciudad siempre estaba repleta de ruido y caos.
In my teenage years, I used to visit him frequently. I remember that it was close to the dermatology office where I went, every time I had an appointment and the waiting room was packed with people I took the opportunity to take a walk through the zoo to distract myself for a while. Those were different times, but even then the deterioration of the animals' living conditions was noticeable; many had died and others survived thanks to the food that visitors brought them. Despite the situation, it was nice to walk through the park and breathe fresh air since that specific area of the city was always full of noise and chaos.
Con el paso de los años, el parque de la Guaricha se convirtió en sinónimo de inseguridad, nadie lo visitaba y al parecer, el estado lo había olvidado por completo. La última vez que fui, lo hice a pesar de las advertencias de los lugareños sobre la presencia de ladrones y drogadictos. Solo me atreví a llegar hasta la entrada y luego regresé al consultorio.
Over the years, the Guaricha park became synonymous with insecurity, no one visited it and apparently the state had completely forgotten it. The last time I went, I did so despite warnings from locals about the presence of thieves and drug addicts. I only dared to get as far as the entrance and then I returned to the office.
Sin embargo, después del 2020 y la pandemia, el gobierno se comprometió a reacondicionar ciertas áreas de la ciudad y el parque zoológico de la Guaricha fue uno de los beneficiados. Estuvo un tiempo en remodelaciones, reestructuraron el lugar, agregaron nuevos animales e iniciaron campañas para limpiar la reputación del espacio. Un año después de eso, me atreví a visitarlo nuevamente y realmente era otro lugar, jamás lo había visto así: limpio, seguro y muy familiar.
However, after 2020 and the pandemic, the government committed to reconditioning certain areas of the city and the Guaricha zoo was one of the beneficiaries. They spent some time undergoing renovations, they restructured the place, added new animals and started campaigns to clean up the space's reputation. A year after that, I dared to visit it again and it really was another place, I had never seen it like this: clean, safe and very familiar.
Los cuidadores tienen un trato excepcional con los animales y siempre hay actividades recreativas para los niños, desde entonces, he ido un par de veces más y sin duda alguna es un sitio fantástico para pasar un día libre. Un lugar tranquilo donde puedes respirar paz mientras paseas y obtienes ese pedacito de naturaleza que todos los humanos anhelamos de vez en cuando en nuestras vidas.
The caretakers have exceptional treatment with the animals and there are always recreational activities for the children. Since then, I have gone a couple more times and it is without a doubt a fantastic place to spend a day off. A quiet place where you can breathe peace while you walk and get that little piece of nature that all humans crave from time to time in our lives.
