We have all had those days where the pup decides to get down and roll in a big pile of poop, and even eat it! Ever wonder why? Me too. I was reading a magazine article in "dogs naturally", titled "The Next Generation Of Probiotics - Julie Anne Lee DCH RcsHom", and it was about why dogs eat poop. So, of course, in big print on the first page it asks you why dogs eat rabbit poop. I have rabbits. Right now about 40, and getting ready to ramp up production for the spring. I was just shooing my dog, Dusty Rooster, from eating the poop. In my head he was making a link to the rabbit and because I have them locked up pretty well, he would fantasize about eating a rabbit dinner while only getting their poop.
As it turns out, they do this for a reason. Yes, like the article says, probiotics! There are lots of healthy bacteria in rabbit poop that dogs need due to the difference in their digestive tract. I do feed my dogs bagged food from the feed store, but they also hunt regularly and I give them leftovers. They also seek and find eggs regularly, regardless of their age, yuck! They are fairly healthy dogs, though my pup, Brandi Dog, recently got worms, probably from some old eggs. I treated her with wormwood and I will be starting second round today. She has started to regain weight and is far happier and energetic since I did round one with her.
Though the article itself is probably geared toward those who live in cities, the content was good. They are promoting probiotics you can buy to supplement for your dogs and the fact that you can now test for missing flora in your dog's belly. That is great, it will be easy to tell if your dog is sick due to lack of good food, my God, I am going to guess that the majority of dogs living in houses, eating kibbles-n-bits will be diagnosed hyper-canine-microflora-syndrom, Another way for the vet to make a little extra cash from you. I am sure they will start RXing new probiotics to your dog at a premium, I really don't need it, since my pups regularly hunt critters around the farm and, well, eat rabbit and chicken poop here and there. Yet another awesome reason to farm small! So next time you see your dog eating crap, step back and smile!
