This morning, my wife, daughter and I went to a fundraising breakfast for a local bird sanctuary. The food was decent, but the best part was that after we finished eating, we had the whole sanctuary to ourselves.
This place is usually pretty crowded, but it was so nice to be able to walk at our own pace and see all the birds without any crowds. It was still pretty early in the morning, and I think a lot of the birds were still sleeping because there wasn't as many out as normal.
These two birds were so cool. The female was walking around carrying stuff in her beak, but the male was just walking behind her and filling up his throat thing and making some really cool deep noises.
While we were looking at these birds, one of the workers came up and told us a little more about these birds. They are called Southern Ground Hornbills and these two are mates. They recently had an egg, which hurt the female in the process of her laying it, so she needed to be removed from the sanctuary to get some medical attention. When they were reunited, the worker said that the male was so happy and was singing and bringing her treats and presents to show how much he missed her. They were probably my favorite birds at the whole place today.
