Hey guys, what I’m sharing today is very different from what I mostly do. In fact, it’s the first time posting into this community. I think the people who have heard me talking about not being able to cook are going to be shocked about it.
I’ve read sooo many posts talking about hoe cooking saves you money. Aside that there’s the fact that food you cook yourself is most likely healthier than what you’ll be buying at the fast food joint because you made this one yourself, as opposed to not knowing what you’re putting in your body every time you eat a fast food. Then there’s the last reason that I want to learn how to cook for my partner. It’s sweet cooking your partner a meal and I want to be able to do that some time.
So two days ago, I officially revamped my cooking journey. I’m saying revamped because of course I’m not a complete idiot - I know how to cook some things, I just haven’t cooked in a long time.
I decided to cook oiled rice (called baby rice here) with pepper. I had @nhaji01 coaching me through out because this was my first time cooking this. Stick with me as I take you through my journey.
Ingredients
- Oil
- Rice
- Pepper
- Tomato
- Maggi
- Salt
I wanted to add green pepper because I love green pepper, but unfortunately the nearest grocery store run out. So I had to make do with what I got.
I also forgot to arrange all the ingredients I got into one picture at the start, so I’ll be giving you this one which I took somewhere in the middle of my cooking. It still doesn’t have all the ingredients cos it’s missing the maggi.
Procedure
My cooking was in two parts: preparing the rice itself and then the pepper sauce. Ironically, I started with the latter.
I started by first washing everything I had, starting with my tomatoes. This was what the water looked like after washing only the tomatoes. Pretty cloudy.
Then I cut the tomatoes in halves to slice. If I’m being honest, this was the easiest cutting I did. The onions were the hardest, but I’ll get there. Lol
I cut the insides of the tomatoes to wash the seeds out from there. I’ve heard some very scary stories about tomato seeds growing in people’s stomachs and out of their mouths. Hey hey, don’t shoot the messenger.
I ripped the tomatoes to shreds doing this. I know because I’ve seen Nhaji do this before and the tomatoes still stayed intact after washing. In my defense, it’s my first time and I didn’t know how to properly do it.
Then came the next easy thing - slicing em up. Tomatoes have a soft body, so that was pretty easy.
You know what doesn’t have a soft body? Onions, and that’s what’s next!
Like the tomatoes, I cut 2 onions in four halves (two halves each). Oh did I mention that I forgot to wash my onions with everything else when I washing? So I washed my onions separately after cutting in half.
Then I sliced it with teary eyes for close to 15 minutes!
You can tell that this was my first time slicing them because they look extra big and the sizes are not consistent.
After slicing my onions I added a full sliced onion to my tomatoes, added some pepper, and some maggi (which is not showing in the picture here) to blend.
Then I blended them into my pepper sauce and voila!
Yes, I didn’t add any salt because I forgot of the salt in the process. I added my salt after I finished blending. I also forgot to fry my egg first, so I just left it because I have only one saucepan and I was supposed to have fried my egg in it first before I started cooking my rice.😅
And now for the rice…
I don’t have pictures of this part of the cooking, so I’m going to talk abstract about my cheffy process here:) I actually forgot to take any pictures. Maybe it was because I was exhausted at this point because I spent like an hour on just the pepper sauce.
I started by putting my saucepan on the fire and heating until it was rid of any small drops of water that was inside it. Then I added my cooking oil, waited a bit and added a quarter of a full onion in.
I almost set my room on fire after burning my onions from prolonged frying and then adding eater immediately. I’m sure my next door neighbor must’ve been scared of the sound it produced. I learnt my first cooking lesson there.
So I added my salt and a cube of maggi, then my rice and covered the saucepan and left it to cook.
I realized later when my rice was fully cooked but there was still a lot of what looked like oil under, that I put too much oil. Lesson two.
This was my rice at the end. I didn’t cook a lot because I was only cooking for dinner and (maybe) breakfast for myself. as if someone would want to eat anything the me right now cooks. Sorry about the burnt onions @nhaji01, told you this would happen🙂. It was a great experience and I’m proud of myself for this start.
If I don’t give up and keep more food, I’ll keep sharing here so you all can be a part of my transformative journey. Haha thanks for passing by! I hope you enjoyed my 2-hour cook-a-thon😂.
