My department has officially lost my confidence in them to deliver with their record of postponing every event they鈥檝e organized the past 2 months. If you鈥檝e been following my account a while, the incidence of the cancelled Ghana Biochemistry Students Association(GHABSA) Congress immediately surfaces your mind. My department鈥檚 latest disappointment is about a dinner night we were supposed to have last night. Lol what makes it even more disappointing is that even yesterday was not the originally planned date. It was originally scheduled for today Saturday but got changed to yesterday because the date crashed with SRC Night, a very heavily attended event. The executives feared if the date wasn鈥檛 changed, there would be a good chance attendance will be poor(and they were right to think so). Who in their right mind would leave the SRC night that鈥檚 completely free and probably will be hella more fun than the GHABSA dinner which you pay for a ticket for, for a probably not as interesting night? Definitely not me!
Bear in mind that this dinner was not a standalone event but part of a series of events in the name of GHABSA week celebration. Only the date for the dinner got postponed because it crashed with the SRC night. This is a flier of the original plan for GHABSA week celebration.
Tickets cost 20 cedis(somewhere around $2). This is rather interesting considering that we already pay association dues. In my opinion, this dinner should鈥檝e been free at least for students who have paid their dues, but for whatever reason, we鈥檙e charged 20 cedis for a ticket with a promise of an outstanding night. Time will tell whether it鈥檚 worth it I guess.
Anyways, my rant is about the fact that despite already changing it from tomorrow to today, even today turns out postponed too. The date鈥檚 been changed to next month. Familiar right? That鈥檚 the same thing that happened with the GHABSA congress. Date got pushed a month forward.
In a way, they have a good reason for pushing it a month forward. According to the explanation I was given, they did this so that we could properly enjoy the dinner. I鈥檒l explain.
Again if you鈥檝e been following my account for a while, you know that I鈥檓 not as active these days because I鈥檓 writing exams(mid-semester to be specific). It鈥檚 mid-semester鈥檚 week on my campus and everyone is busy studying for their papers. End of semester exam itself will be in a week and the busy just gets busier. So my department pushed the dinner a month forward, a day after vacation(the end of semester exam) so that people will be more relaxed without academic stress and enjoy the event. Sounds thoughtful of them, but the fact that for everything they plan, they don鈥檛 put proper thought into and later end up changing the date is just frustrating.
Another good thing I see for which I鈥檓 less pissed(if I can say something like that) about the postponement is that if the event really did happen today, chances are that I most likely wouldn鈥檛 have anything to wear. Don鈥檛 take that in the literal sense of course lol. I just mean, I鈥檇 be conflicted on what to wear. Official dressing is not really my forte, as I prefer casual stuff everyday. This is to say that I didn鈥檛 include a dinner wear in my wardrobe when I was packing for this semester. Well how does the event getting postponed help your situation?
I contacted my tailor friend on campus to make me something to wear for the dinner night. I left the material, the design and everything at his discretion because I found that tailors and essentially artists, do their job best when you leave the creativity of the process to them. Choosing a material and design yourself kinda limits their creativity and the potential of getting great results.
As for the dinner, I know better than to be expecting anything out of the ordinary knowing how much of a killjoy my department can be(maybe I鈥檓 being a little dramatic here lol). Like I said though, we鈥檒l see.
In the meantime, I鈥檓 on my way to an inter-level football match organized by the same department. I鈥檒l tell you about that later today if I鈥檓 not knocked out early tonight by fatigue. Have a great day people. Wish me luck:)
