I probably think too much. Sometimes I even think too much about thinking too much!

One of the "contributing" things I've learned over the years is how to be a "passenger" in my own life for a moment and to observe myself undertaking some kind of process and notice what exactly it is I'm doing, and how my stress levels and concentration are affected.

One of the ways I have often felt in life is that my existence seems a bit like perpetually having your browser open with too many tabs going, all at once. On some level all the tabs are relevant and thus needed for what I do, but sometimes the fact that I need seven tabs open in order to perform a very simple task is — for lack of a better term — overkill.

It's not overkill in the sense of whether or not it results in the outcome I want, but it's overkill in the sense that paying as much attention to detail as I do ultimately being "not relevant" to 99.9% of the general population.

And since most of the things I do that somehow involve other people — such as selling products or artwork, or my own skills as a writer and editor — are being served to people who really don't care about the level of detail I offer, so I am potentially wasting my time.

Which brings me to a question I have often ended up discussing with people, of whether you should focus on being truly yourself by your own yardstick or only to the degree that it is useful to other people that you're being true to yourself.

I suppose the questioning comes from the part of life where you invariably encounter people who insist that being true to yourself is actually selfish. But selfish for who?

Do we actually owe it to anybody to modify ourselves in such a way as to make them comfortable at the expense of our own wellbeing? Or if we find ourselves tempted to do so is it simply a sign that we need to walk away from that person?

Bringing this back to "thinking too much," it's something I find myself contemplating (perhaps too much) in this day and age where a significant part of our reality seems rather Orwellian in nature, and more than a few people seem to be living in a reality where they are virtually turning their back on actual reality service of supporting some strange kind of unreality.

I'm particularly aware of it since I was raised in a family where we were often expected to abandon our direct experience in order to maintain family lore and image.

I got pretty fed up with it, which is a large part of why I lived with a great distance between them and me.

Of course, there's a difference between getting away from individuals and getting away from an entire society that's showing toxic tendencies...

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of the week!
