Without a doubt, we live in a very busy world, and sometimes it feels like there's just more and more "stuff" piling up on my plate every day.

Unless you are extraordinarily well organized, it's my guess that you probably have at least a few boxes or piles of things — or maybe they're just plans and ideas — that you ”intend to get around to one of these days.”

As part of our own ongoing efforts to downsize and organize our lives, one of the difficult realizations I'm gradually coming to is that there will never be a time when we actually have ”more time,” and the only way any of these things would ever going to get done would be if I actually had more time.

We may not like it, but sometimes we have to make what might seem like some fairly brutal decisions because we're holding onto some hopes that pretty much have zero chance of actually happening... and with each passing day, that chance gets a little smaller.

Even though I may intend to, I'm never going to take the time to actually go through and play all my old vinyl albums (about 300 of them) that may have songs on them that have never been digitized. I need to let go of that idea and simply let the old albums go to somebody who either collects them or is an audiophile with lots of time on their hands.

That'll get four book boxes out of my office space closet, freeing up room (physical AND mental) for something more relevant.

Those boxes of vintage clothing I have carted around with the idea that "I'm going to sell them on eBay one of these days?"

I'm never gonna have time to actually look at those and go through the time consuming process of photographing and listing them. Yes, I know, "but I could make MONEY!"

Truthfully, the better approach would be to just pull them apart and double check that none of them have been eaten completely by moths and silverfish, and then haul it to Goodwill and let somebody else deal with it.

The boxes with tools and art supplies sitting in the attic waiting for the day when I will have enough time to take up pottery? I'm never gonna have enough time to take up pottery and learn it to such a degree that I would actually be happy doing it. I already have several interesting I'm regularly in the middle of, and I don't really have as much time for those was I wish. Taking on another whole thing? Get real! Better to just let go and get it in the hands of somebody who's actively working with pottery right now.

Which brings us to the point that there are probably things in your life that you can look at and point to and recognize — even if it's difficult admit — that what you have there is a bunch of dreams but they're not actually going to ever become something.

And therein lies the essence of why it so often is difficult for people to get rid of stuff: for many of us these things are not just stuff, they are represent saying a potential goodbye to a dream we once thought we would be able to realize in the future.

Time passes!

I suppose it's just part of the aging process that you get to a point where you realize you have fewer days left on this planet and you have already lived. I don't mean that to sound morbid and depressing, by any means, I'm just trying to be somewhat practical.

And, I'm trying to be cognizant of the fact that my energy is better spent on activities I already enjoy, rather than on something new that would likely require me to "back burner" those enjoyable things. I'm also facing the reality that we live lives that are eternally busier and busier and so the notion that there is this magical point in the future when we will have ”more time” it's pretty much pure fantasy!

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your week!
