Looks definitely DO matter, but it's also a very subjective area. From my pespective, "hot" is more about how you carry and present yourself than anything. I've known more than a few "technically speaking" very beautiful women... and standing next to them and interacting with them was a bit like standing next to a walk-in freezer. Not attractive, except in a peripheral "set decoration" sort of way. That works in reverse, too... I suppose it's an energy, as much as anything.
My aim is to look good and feel confident without all the smoke and mirrors, no crazy make up, no distracting with my body. I’m well on my way to that and feel pretty darn excited about that.
That, right there, is the "X" factor. Simply being comfortable in your skin is a crucial part of "hot" you simply can't create with smoke and mirrors and two pounds of make-up.
Of course, that's just my opinion...!
