Happy Halloween to all those who are in a place that observes this holiday, also known as All Hallows' Eve or All Saints' Eve... which is all likely to be a "Christianification" of the Gaelic harvest festival Samhain.
In any case, hope you have a good and fun one!
So our plans for the day was to have a good friend come over late afternoon for some pizza (from our favorite local to-go place) and beer and just relaxing time.
Pumpkins on our railing...
For "obvious reasons" we don't really see people very often these days, but since our friend pretty much keeps to himself anyway, we decided to break the isolation and break bread together.
Well, wouldn't you know it? Our dedicated local pizza place downtown decided that they would be closed this weekend! That is, the entire kitchen, including take-out, is closed...
So we go to the back-up plan... another local Italian restaurant that's "pretty good" although not the greatest ever. However, they do have pretty serviceable pizza, if you know what to order.
Well, wouldn't you know it? The owner and chef — Jason — passed away suddenly in late September and the kitchen has not been open since. And likely will not open ever again.
Mrs. Denmarkguy and I looked at each other and shook our heads... this sort of thing pretty much seems to have been the "flavor" of the year 2020, and it shows no signs of stopping.
Now, mind you, Jason's demise was not related to Covid-19... but one of the things we've been tracking is the surprisingly large number of other things-gone-badly that are ongoing in your surrounding world.
Pause for Reflection...
Of course, this begs the further question of whether there actually is more "death and destruction" in 2020 than any other year... or have we merely become conditioned to scan the horizon for bad news... perhaps because quarantines are forcing us to spend more time at home, often in an "I-feel-sorry-for-myself" frame of mind?
I rather think not.
More likely, just like our human lives ebb and flow in cycles, I am more inclined to believe that the entire world ebbs and flows in great big "meta cycles" that results in our experience being that some years are just more filled with chaos and rotten luck than others.
The fact that Covid-19 came along in what would have been a shit year anyway is purely coincidental, and a sort of Cosmic "Icing on the Cake."
/End Pause for Reflection
Trying to do our best to not have our planned pizza evening ruined, we now have fabricated "Plan C" which consists of a trip to Papa Murphy's for a couple of "take and bake" pizzas we'll cook at home.
Not exactly what we had in mind... but perhaps this is all a useful illustration that we live in a world that basically requires an endless stream of adaptation to current conditions, because you pretty much can't count on anything to turn out like you expected.
And that's NOT a 2020-thing, at least not in my experience: I've been living pretty much all my life that way, because when I sit back and think about it, remarkably little I have ever attempted or been part of has turned out anything near what I expected or hoped for.
And with that, I'm going to go pick up our pizzas!
Unless, of course, I get abducted by aliens on the way...
Happy Halloween, everyone!
