This year, the rainy season in Bangladesh is getting longer. Although the monsoon season is now over according to the calendar, it is still raining heavily. Due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal over the last few days, causing heavy rains and gusts across the country. While writing this post it was still raining a lot outside and the wind is blowing along with it. This wind has broken several branches of a Krisnochura tree in my village house. So, the main topic of my discussion today is to prune plants and trees right time and its benefits. I will also show few pictures and a video during pruning plants.
What do we mean by pruning a plant?
Actually, pruning a plant or tree means cutting off any excess part such as brunches, buds or roots of a tree so that the tree can grow well. Besides the growth pruning improves the good shape of plants. The reason why I mentioned about my Krishnochura tree incident is to rectify the similar incident to others. If I pruned the tree on time, it might not break due to sudden strong wind. Here you can see an example where the tree condition is not good and immediate pruning is required.
Before pruning plants you need to have some experience about this topic. Different plants have different technique to prune. Small plants like flowers and small herbs required to prune only dead and weak parts. Big trees required to cut the branches whereas ornamental plants required to cut more as long as it provides good shape. However, there is a misconception in the minds of the people that if a tree is pruned, the tree may get hurt. We have to remember that plants and trees have high healing power and recover the cut areas shortly and grow branches from there within shot period of time.
Now the question may arise in your mind at what time of the year you will prune the plants and trees. The simple answer is that you can do it at any time of the year, but it is better especially at a certain time, after flowering or picking fruit. The benefit of this is that the trees will have enough time to recover the pruning areas.
Now, the most important part is to select appropriate tools to prune plants. There are many tools like secateurs, loppers, long reach pruners, small garden scissors and many more. These tools have different roles to play. For example, secateurs are appropriate to cut the branches of small flowering plants whereas loppers are usually used to cut strong or thicker branches.
Sharing a small video with you all how we pruned my wife’s hometown garden from my YouTube channel. Hope you will enjoy.
Thanks.
Stay safe and healthy.
