We call it as the positive or the negative based on the person using it and the way of using it. If the good people use it, then it would become the positive energy.
Mantra is been in using since 3000years. The fist known mantra is OM. That is what we called as pranava mantra. om namo narayanaya is the ashtakshara mantra( eight syllable mantra).
The mantra is recited as 'ya narayanaya namo om' in the reverse order. This is the black magic mantra. Om namaha shivaya is the panchakshara mantra( five syllables). The mantra is recited as 'yavashima namo' in the reverse order. This is the rakshasa mantrs. This depicts the prayer to the god if it is recited in one direction.
