As a class teacher, I’ve held many parents’ evenings where I’ve met people from a lot of different walks of life. Here are some things I noticed about the way people shake hands.

Cold and Sweaty Hand Shake

Parents with this hand shake turn out to be nervous of me. They are very deferential and thank me repeatedly for helping their child. It’s a bit embarrassing really as that’s my job. I try to put them at ease.

Crushing Hand Shake

Parents with this hand shake seem to hope I’ll think they are powerful people. They forget that I don’t care how powerful they are. I’m there to talk about their child.
I often wonder if they are dominant or aggressive of character. I wouldn’t like to be their kid.

The Hand Hug Hand Shake

This handshake is from parents who are genuinely caring about their child and wanting me to know it. They are usually mothers grateful for me sorting out their child’s unacceptable behaviour. I’m happy to receive this handshake,
