To mark this return I planned to share a few anecdotes seen during my internship in gynecology!
(I will not reveal either the city or the name of the Doctor where I did this internship to preserve the anonymity of patients and mine as well) :-)
I started my internship in a very nice way : A future mother had a rendez-vous with her baby. On ultrasound we could hear the heartbeat of the baby! It was a first for me, a very emotional moment. Being able to hear for the first time the beating of a tiny heart in the mother's belly really made me cry.
One day, a couple arrived in the office a little worried. They were trying to have a baby for a long time unsuccessfully. After doing all the exams, there are no anomalies. That's when the doctor asks how sexual intercourse happens ...
We discovered then that from the beginning they thought that to make a child it was necessary to go through the navel!
This is not a legend, many people try to "insert" objects into the vagina or rectum. (glass bottles, zucchini, phones, etc ...) You might think that this phenomenon is rather rare but not at all! In emergencies many people arrive because they can no longer remove the object. But this time I had never seen that before. A patient comes walking in a very special way and a big skirt. We discovered the problem directly, she tried to insert a belt (yes yes a belt hanging clothes) in her vagina and could not remove it.
After talking with her, she told us that she was consulted by a psychologist who advised her to take larger and larger objects (the psychologist probably also had a problem).
During this internship I also faced less happy aspects. For example a young woman (under 30) who has cervical cancer. This type of cancer is induced by a virus, the papillomavirus.
I would like to tell you a little about it. It should be known that 50% of men are carriers of this virus and can transmit it to the woman during unprotected sex. Either the woman eliminates it by her immune system, or the virus is aggressive and infects the woman. There are several types of papillomavirus, some of those are more "nasty". If this virus sets in well and is untreated, it can eventually causes cancer of the cervix. Fortunately, there is a vaccine that protects against a large majority of types of viruses.
During this internship I also did my first blood test ! (which I did successfully without doing any harm). I also had the opportunity to do a first ultrasound of a pregnant woman. I do not know how to explain the emotion that I felt when through the probe I discovered a baby!
This internship allowed me to discover a specialty that I did not know very well. The gynecologist is fortunate to see the miracles of life every day, help to give birth to babies, but also to help women in their privacy, to advise them, etc.
