So why did I disappear for... shite, a month and a half after posting daily?
A few reasons and/or excuses. One is that I got super sick from allergies that kicked my booty and spending time on the computer/tablet was limited cause of how sensitive my eyes were.
That is only part of it, I also got super obessed with Roller coin, and then with a zombie survival game called State of Decay 2, and theeeen a friend convinced me to try Claude code. First I did some easy things, and now it's making an app for me. It's a cross between a step counter app and a village builder app where everything in the town your rebuilding is tied to how much you step rather than time. This is something I never thought I'd see happen so having Claude code build it for me is pretty amazing.
BUT WAIT KYLING I THOUGHT YOU HATED AI?
I've softened, and I still don't like generative AI for images, and I still think calling yourself an artist when your just putting prompts into nightcafe or whatever is insulting to people who do create art. I wouldn't call myself a coder because I told Claude to build me something. While I can do some very basic things in godot, and I understand how claude is doing the things. I'm not doing them.
It does brooch a lot of questions about creativity vs building. I know from talking to people who do proper programming that writing code can require truly creative problem solving. Which brings up all sorts of questions about what is creativity, can a machine be creative and a host of other philosophical questions that I am still pondering in the shower and while on walks.
I do have a few conclusions.
People should be honest about AI use. Do not call yourself an artist, or writer and then show things AI made. Having used AI a bunch, it is not the same as creating it from scratch on your own.
SO yes people trying to pass off AI made things as made by them "cause I told it what to do" are fooling themselves and are not appreciating how much work making it without AI is. Anything with a significant amount of AI usage should be VERY CLEARLY marked as such.
I also stand by the idea that AI is not a great source for information outside of certain realms. Claude knows what it's saying in regards to code, but it's given me straight up wrong information about other things, including contradicting itself depending on how a question is phrased.
There's also AI models helping in very real ways around the world, an AI model that is learning how to spot cancer could help catch early stages of cancer making it more treatable and reducing cancer deaths, as well as freeing up the limited amount of doctors with that skill to focus on treatment instead of diagnosis. Theres also an AI model that's been used in drones to protect a wild life reserve and as a result zero poachers are getting through.
And lastly, AI data warehouses need to be set up in a sustainable way. AI isn't going anywhere so it needs to find a way that is sustainable and not ruining the environment at a horrifying rate.
And lastly, am I sure there's a real difference between me using Claude to make this app idea I've had for ages exists and someone using nightcafe or grok image to do the same for an image?
No I'm not sure, esp if they're honest about the fact nightcafe made it for them. It's entirely possible that I feel the way I do because I'm an artist.
