Hi everyone welcome once again to my blog today am writing on what it means being the second child of the house. Please as you read engage 🙏🙏
Being the second child in a family is quite a unique experience that I have faced. Neither are the first born who gets all the attention, nor the last born who often gets spoiled. Instead you are just in the middle Sometimes overlooked but also free in different ways. The first born is more like an experiment for the parents, they are extra careful with them, they usually set strict rules and high expectations for them. But by the time the second child is born everything changes. Parents are more relaxed. They know that kids don't break easily so they give the second child more freedom, you (second child) might not have as many childhood pictures as the oldest and younger ones, but you also don't have as many restrictions.
As the second child, you often inherit your older siblings' clothes, school books and even their toys. While this saves money it also means you rarely get anything new just for yourself. Sometimes people outside compare you to your siblings. If you do something that is not right they always say why can't you be like your siblings, my mom always says that. I always get compared with my siblings, the eldest to be precise. Sometimes I feel pressured to match up with my siblings, also if you're different from your siblings people notice that too. As the second child, since you're not the center of attention you learn to adjust quickly. You watch how your older siblings do with your parents or people outside and copy the good trick, while avoiding their mistakes. As a second child you become good at negotiating whether it's toys, choosing TV shows or convincing your parents. Second children are always known as peace makers in the family. Being the second child you understand both your older siblings' bossiness and the younger siblings' need for attention. As the second child you know how to calm, fight and make compromises because you've seen how siblings argue for work. Since your older siblings have already done many things first you have to find your own way. Maybe they were the quite studious type, you might be the outgoing social one that helped you to develop your own identity instead of just following in their footsteps.
There are many times when being the second child feels lonely. Parents might assume you're fine because you're easy going, but you still need attention like the other's. Birthdays and achievements might not feel as special because your parents have already celebrated them with your older siblings but this also teaches you to be independent and not always rely on praise. Even with the challenge being the second child has its perks you get more freedom than the first born child and more experience than the youngest .
In summary being the second child means you are not the star In the house and you're also not the baby in the house. You're somewhere in between adapting, learning and quietly making your own space. It might feel unfair sometimes but it also makes you strong, flexible and clever.
