There is a job i stayed in too long because leaving would have meant admitting that the version of me who took it had gotten something wrong. The sunk cost of what i had already invested in the direction kept me moving in it even after it had stopped making honest sense.

We do this more than we realise. Loyalty to past decisions that no longer serve current reality, disguised as consistency of character. As if the self that existed at the point of the original choice deserves ongoing deference even when they were working with different information than you now have.

Your past self made the best decision they could with what they knew and what they were at the time. That is all any of us can do. But that past self does not have more authority over your current life than you do. The decision they made does not bind you to continue it indefinitely regardless of what you have learned since.

This applies to more than careers. To relationships entered for reasons that no longer fully hold. To identities built in environments you have since left. To beliefs inherited from people and places that shaped you early and have not been examined since. To the version of yourself you presented to certain people years ago that you have been maintaining for their comfort long after it stopped fitting you honestly.

You are allowed to update. Changing direction is not weakness or inconsistency. It is the appropriate response to new information, which is what growth actually is when you strip the language away from it.

The past self did their best. Thank them for getting you here. And then make the decision that serves who you actually are now, not who they were then.

You are the one who has to live in the current day. Make sure the one making the decisions is the current you.
