There was a long stretch where i operated on a kind of background faith that something external would eventually resolve things. The right opportunity would appear. Someone would recognise what i was capable of and create a path. Circumstances would shift enough that the thing i wanted would become available without me having to do the most uncomfortable parts of reaching for it.

That is not a belief i would have stated out loud. But it was structuring my behaviour in a recognisable way, a passivity dressed as patience, a waiting that looked like strategy.

The realisation that nobody is coming is one of those things that sounds brutal and is actually the most liberating thing i have encountered. Because it removes the variable of waiting. It makes you the only agent in your own story who actually has the ability to move things.

The thing you are waiting for someone else to give you, the permission, the opportunity, the conditions, the rescue, almost certainly requires you to build or create or reach for it yourself. That is harder than waiting. But waiting is its own kind of hard, a long slow hard that produces nothing while it is happening.

There is a practical difference between being helped and being saved. Help is real and valuable and something to both offer and accept without shame. People who support each other and create conditions for each other to succeed, that is how most things actually get built. But that is different from waiting for a rescuer who is not coming to come.

You are going to have to build the thing yourself. With help, with collaboration, with people alongside you who care. But you are the one who has to start. You are the one who has to keep going when it is hard. You are the one responsible for your own life in the most fundamental sense.

That is not a burden. That is agency.
