There have been a few periods in my life where i genuinely did not know what i was doing or where things were going. Not the productive uncertainty of being between chapters. The heavier kind where the ground felt genuinely absent and nothing i tried to focus on stayed in focus.

I did not feel growth in those periods. Did not feel like i was being redirected toward something better. I just felt lost in the specific way that has no narrative attached to it yet, no story about what it means, just the plain experience of not knowing.

But looking back from a distance that was not available at the time, those periods were almost always immediately before something shifted. Not because discomfort magically produces growth, that romanticism i am still suspicious of. But because genuine lostness tends to strip away the things you were doing on autopilot and force a more honest reckoning with what you actually want versus what you had just been continuing by default.

When the ground disappears you cannot keep walking the same path. You have to actually look at where you are and figure out which direction to move from there. That looking, forced by the lostness, produced some of the most honest decisions i have made.

There was a period specifically where i felt most directionless that turned out to be the beginning of the thing i actually wanted to be doing. I could not have seen that at the time. The lostness was real and uncomfortable and not secretly productive in any way i could access while inside it.

But the lostness was also the opening. The space where something new could actually be considered, because the old thing had fallen away enough to leave room.

If you are in that kind of period right now, i cannot promise it is secretly going somewhere good. I can only say that some of the best redirections i have experienced looked indistinguishable from being lost while they were
