For most of my adult life my morning started in reactive mode before i had even properly woken up. The alarm was the signal to check the phone which immediately imported whatever the world had deposited overnight directly into the first minutes of my day. Messages, news, notifications. All of it arriving before i had a single thought of my own.
I never decided this was a good system. It just became the system through accumulated habit before i examined it closely enough to question it.
The change happened accidentally first. A few days where the usual rush was impossible and i moved through the morning more slowly without choosing to. And somewhere in the middle of those days i noticed a different quality to how i was operating. Less reactive. More settled in a way that seemed to persist longer than just the morning itself.
The rushed start had been setting a tone i was carrying through the whole day without realising it. Beginning in reactive mode primed me to stay in reactive mode. The rare slower start produced something that held differently across the hours that followed.
After noticing that enough times to trust it i started protecting the first part of the morning deliberately. Not through an elaborate ritual. Just a few minutes of not immediately reaching for the phone. Of existing briefly in my own mind before other people’s things started arriving into it.
The world loses nothing by you taking fifteen minutes to wake up as a human being before you make yourself available to it. Everything external waits. The notifications do not expire. The messages are still there.
You are allowed to start the day in your own head before you give the rest of it to everything else.
That small shift is worth more than it sounds like it should be.
