Imagine I was told some years ago, David, what is your favorite color? I would have answered without blinking, blue 馃挋 馃數.
Mostly, royal blue.

And they continue, David why blue?
I will say it's because blue represents royalty. It represents calmness. It represents power. It represents a man who has arrived. When I wore my blue materials to church, I felt like a king. I felt like Obong of Akwa Ibom state. I used to tell everybody that blue color is for men who know their value without hesitation.

My whole wardrobe was 80 per cent blue. Blue shirt, blue trousers, blue boxers. Even my toothbrush was blue. I was partially called Sir Dave Blue, aka Sir DB.

Then I got married.
And everything changed just like that.

My wife is so young.
Not just young in age, but young in spirit as well.
She laughs loud and she loves bright things. She loves life and she told me one day, babe, why is everything in your house looking like a mortuary of blue?
Where is the fire?
Where is the love?

I laughed so hard and she did not laugh at all.
Next market day, she came back with a red curtainband I said to her what is this and she responded it's our new curtain.

Then red bedsheet and again a red rug in the parlor. In a twinkle of an eye it was red plates, red cups, red buckets, red pillows, red Christmas light that stays on from January to December.

I went to the kitchen to drink water, red cup. I went to the bedroom, red bedsheet is shouting at me. I wanted to wear blue, she said babe, just wear this red polo, you look fresher in red.

Slowly, without permission, my house turned to red house.

At first, I was fighting it. I said this woman wants to change my color. But normally most women including my wife knows how to handle issues calmly.

Though one night, light went off, normal Nigerian NEPA did their thing, and we were sitting in the parlor with only that red Christmas light on. She was laughing, gisting me about how she argued with a woman in the market. Her face was glowing red. And I realized that the house is not just red.
The house is warm.
The house is alive.
The house is love.

Listen,
Blue made me feel like a king.
But red makes me feel loved.

Blue was about the youthful me, royalty, ego, that I have arrived.

Red is about us, love, fire, youthfulness, sacrifice. Red is the color of the blood that pumps when you truly love someone and you are willing to change even your favorite color for peace to reign.

My late father would say, David allow your home for your wife to manage that since my late mother was the manager of our home that we have being living in peace always.
So I have to copy my father and handed over my home to my wife to run. Some women are treasures, rear gifts of nature.

Now if you ask me my favorite color, I will say red without hesitation. This is not because I was forced, but because love taught me to see differently and accept changes naturally.

My wife once asked me, why do you now love red? I told her that it is because every time I see red, I see her and she laughed and blushed.

And yes, everything in our house is now red. My friends who visit say Dave B, your house looks like Valentine every day. I tell them yes, because I live with love every day.

So my color changed from blue to red, from royalty to romance, from me to we.
