Marcia took the key as she watched the cat walk away and the purring slowly fade. Despite her fear, for the first time she felt she was closer to discovering the truth. She left the library and headed home, and on the way she could think of nothing but those words from the book, the composer Varela, and the mysterious phrase about the guardian of the last melody. When she got home, she began searching every nook and cranny and opened boxes that had been sealed for years, but she couldn’t find anything—until she noticed a small wooden box hidden behind her grandfather’s old piano. She was surprised, because the box bore the same silhouette as the black cat she had seen on the book’s cover.
She opened the box with the key and felt that inside she would discover something that would change her life forever. The strange thing was that there was only a folded sheet of paper and an old, incomplete sheet of music, so she opened the letter, which read: “Marcia, if you’re reading this, it’s because the guardian decided to find you.” “For generations, our family has protected Varela’s final melody, since it was a work born from the last memories of a man who loved music. Before he died, he asked that this melody be completed only by someone capable of feeling the music from the heart—and not out of a desire for fame.” Marcia began to cry, as she felt that same connection to the music.
The letter continued: “Ever since you were little, you’ve learned to play melodies, and your grandfather always knew the cat would find its way to you; however, the song didn’t belong to him—it simply waited for you to be born.” Marcia was still moved and recalled those nights when she played with her grandfather and he told her that the best songs weren’t composed with the hands, but with the soul. At the end of the letter was one final sentence: “Don’t be afraid of the guardian; he’s only there to ensure that the most important music isn’t forgotten. That’s why you’ll see that the purring will cease to be a mystery and will become the sign that every note is in the right place.”
Marcia put the letter away, and all those days of fear, the sleepless nights, and the presence of the black cat suddenly made sense: she had never been pursued, but rather protected. So she sat down at the piano and listened to the purring again, but this time she no longer felt fear—only peace. She began to play that melody, which had been incomplete, and it began to come to life. The black cat appeared and looked at Marcia for a few seconds, and for the first time, it slowly tilted its head as if to thank her.
As she played the last note, the cat slowly vanished, and the purring was never heard again. Marcia realized that the guardian’s mission was over and that she could now compose songs with complete peace of mind, because she understood that some melodies never disappear—they simply wait for the right person to finish telling their story.
