Marcia stood frozen in front of the piano as it played and the black cat rested on top of it, but the strangest thing about that moment was that the cat’s eyes shone brighter than usual, as if they held hundreds of memories. After uttering those words, the cat vanished, and a second later the piano stopped playing and the room fell silent. She ran back to her room, yet she couldn’t stop thinking about that phrase: “The song isn’t finished yet.” She also began to wonder, “What song? Why was she the only one who could hear that purring?” That’s why Marcia went from being afraid to needing an answer.
The next morning, she went into town to visit a library where many people said manuscripts, diaries, and sheet music by famous musicians—which had never been published and had been forgotten over time—were preserved. Upon arriving, she noticed that the library was very large, dimly lit, and filled with the scent of old books. She entered, feeling a little afraid, and after taking a few steps, she heard the purring again, as if it were guiding her.
As she made her way through the library’s aisles, the purring grew louder, until she reached a section where there was a dusty black book with a cover depicting a composer sitting at a piano, with the same black cat resting beside him. Marcia was very afraid, but she picked up the book and began reading each page. She discovered that the composer’s name was Varela—a musician capable of writing melodies that could make anyone cry. However, he died before he could perform his song, and that’s why, ever since then, everyone says that a strange black cat appears to accompany all the musicians who try to finish that melody.
Marcia kept looking and noticed a phrase that read, “Only those who listen to music with their hearts and not with their ears will be able to see the guardian of the last melody.” At that moment, Marcia remembered a story her grandfather had told her about a black cat that protected the songs that must never disappear. Everything began to make sense, and at that very moment, the purring could be heard again behind her. She turned around to find the black cat staring intently at her, and he said, “The library only holds the story…” Marcia wanted to ask him more questions, but the cat walked away, leaving behind a key—one that could unlock something and reveal why she had been chosen to hear the purring that no one else could hear.
