In Vietnam and even most of the places I lived in Thailand I didn't really experience this and NO, this is not saying negative things about Thailand or Vietnam. I think they are just more commerce oriented when it comes to social situations. The Mexicans that I've been around seem to just want to welcome people.

Hmmm... This took me a long time to figure out a way to respond to you. I think, for the most part in Asian countries, if we see a Caucasian, we are not able to relate, or know how to construct a useful conversation, hence we rather NOT begin with hello, unless we have an agenda. If that explain to you why is it always a commercial reason before someone approaches you.

On the other hand, I feel exactly the same when I was in Johannesburg. I'm neither black nor white 😅 nobody wants to talk to me, unless they have something to sell me, or I'm being hold up at gun point(ok that was a one way conversation though - gimme the cash! And I complied).

Maybe... Just maybe... Mexico is so near to Merica, and you guys have enough cultural exchange, to an extend my sister in law told me she can speak Mandarin with a white guy in china town and he understands it, just like Pablo can speak pretty well Spanglish to the Merican? Just maybe, that's why you will feel the difference?

  • this is NOT a racist comment, being raised in a multiracial country, I'm just pointing out the fun fact that how we feel for a different race that we don't "normalized" in our daily life -
