Venous fly trap: tips for winter

Our venous fly trap has grown like crazy over the summer. Now that it's winter there are no flies to feed it. So here are some tips and tricks for anyone else who owns this cool plants and has some doubts for winter.

During winter, Venus flytraps enter dormancy and require less food, so feeding them is usually unnecessary. However, if you still wish to feed them occasionally, here are some options:

1. Rehydrated Bloodworms: You can buy dried bloodworms (available in pet stores for fish) and rehydrate a small piece with water. Offer it to the trap using tweezers.
2. Specialized Carnivorous Plant Food: There are plant-specific fertilizers designed for carnivorous plants that you can lightly mist on their leaves or traps. Use sparingly and only as directed.
3. Freeze-Dried Insects: Tiny pieces of freeze-dried insects, such as crickets or mealworms, can be rehydrated and placed inside the trap.
4. Fish Food Pellets: Small, soft fish food pellets can work in a pinch. Choose high-protein pellets, and soak them in water before feeding.

Tips:
• Only feed the traps that are open, and avoid overfeeding.
• Make sure the food is small enough to fit entirely inside the trap.
• Stimulate the trap lightly to mimic insect movement, ensuring it seals properly for digestion.
Remember, Venus flytraps primarily get their nutrients from the soil and sunlight, so feeding them during dormancy is not critical.
