Saludos comunidad. holos.lotus@holos.lotus

Greetings community, holos.lotus@holos.lotus

It doesn't have to be rum, or tobacco, or anything that comes in a sealed envelope; sometimes it's sweets, the phone, others' approval, or the person you can't seem to leave even though they hurt you. Dependency doesn't come with a danger label; it can even sit next to us on that neighborhood park bench, and we call it habit.

Around here we live in times that can push us to seek refuge: scarcity, uncertainty, the exhaustion of solving even the impossible, the distance of those who left—all of that creates a kind of thirst that isn't always named. And in that context, compulsive behaviors find fertile ground. I'm not referring only to illegal drugs, which exist and cause harm, but to those other dependencies that have been normalized until they become invisible: the alcohol that lightens anguish, the cigarette that accompanies waiting, the foods that calm anxieties, that phone that "shortens" distances and also silences, the need for the other as a way of shaping existence.

A coffee, a sweet, a drink on a special occasion doesn't make anyone dependent. The line is crossed when one stops choosing, and can't say no, when the absence of what is consumed unsettles, generates anguish, and only its presence calms the discomfort. At that moment we wouldn't be talking about tastes, but about an imposed need. Life gets organized around that dependency: money, time, relationships, projects—everything is subordinated to sustaining the habit, and freedom contracts without us even realizing it.

It might even seem funny how certain dependencies are justified and others demonized. Cigarettes and alcohol have their social spaces, their rituals, or even poetry; sweets are given as gifts on birthdays; emotional dependency is confused with love; overwork is applauded as sacrifice. Yet the mechanism is the same: over and over, the will is yielded, and when the will cracks, everything else becomes disordered.

In our societies, these losses of control have consequences that go beyond the individual. A family that spends on alcohol what it needs for food is not an abstract drama; it's a reality that repeats behind closed doors. The one who can't let go of the phone because there they find the life they lack is also building a dependency. A woman who endures a relationship that diminishes her because she feels that without that person she is nobody is handing over her freedom in installments. And so dependencies become a silent form of resistance or escape, but also of self-destruction.

Daily life is not a doctor's office, but perhaps with a bit of honesty we could ask ourselves about the times we postpone what's important to feed a habit that subtracts, or the occasions when we confuse momentary relief with solutions—to question what place those dependencies occupy in our lives. Health, well-being, even happiness, are not luxuries but rights that dissolve when we hand over the helm.

The life we can give ourselves is much larger than what fits inside a dependency. In societies that resist, create, and dream despite adversities, perhaps the most necessary work is the one we wage within, to regain control of something that belongs to us: our will.
