Crime is unacceptable and is punished by the law through the appropriate authorities when a person goes that route. This is common knowledge. There's no place for crime in our societies even though we keep seeing them happening, which means there's a continuous need to track criminal activities and punish the perpetrators of these acts. Without laws defining crimes and punishing criminals, there would be a more chaotic society.
So yes, crimes need to be continually addressed and punished. From community service to travel restraint, imprisonment, and even the death sentence, these are various ways that criminals get punished, depending on the nature of the crime and as the law stipulates. Criminals being sent to prison seems to be one of the most common and viable way of punishing criminals. The sentence of prison, for a period or lifetime is clear on what lies ahead.
The main purpose of sending criminals to prison is to punish them because of what they did, which are the crimes they committed. This is why there are different sentences for crimes committed by people. All those sentences are meant to punish them for breaking the law and causing harm to others, directly or indirectly. Since criminal activities are unacceptable and wrong, they face punishments for doing those wrong and unacceptable things.
However, does it stop there? Is it just about punishment, or is there more to sending criminals to prison? As mentioned, the main purpose of sending criminals to prison is to punish them. Also, to stop them from committing those crimes again by limiting their movement through confinement within the prison walls, which denies them some privileges as well. In addition to that, prisoners go through some activities and duties within the prison walls.
The purpose of some of those is still meant to punish, while others are meant to do otherwise. And that's to rehabilitate the prisoners; to help them become better people. There are people who found meaning and positivity in life because of the rehabilitation they received in prison. Through counselling, education, vocational and skill training, it has helped some prisoners to become better people, making the rehabilitation efforts helpful to them.
If criminals are sent back into society especially, after serving their sentence based on the nature of the crime committed, this rehabilitation effort could be helpful. Rehabilitation however shouldn't be without them paying for their crimes. The prison should do that; at the same time they get rehabilitated in the process to become better people. Nonetheless, rehabilitation doesn't and shouldn't mean an absence of accountability and repercussions.
It's usually hard to talk about this sort of topic. Mostly because of the people who get hurt and affected by the actions of these criminals. It's never an easy thing to take. When you consider all that, it's hard to not wish for nothing but the worst and not even an iota or semblance of anything good and helpful to these criminals. That feeling can't be invalidated because of what the victims must have felt or gone through. The nature of the crime could demand that too.
