In my instance, as a photographer, why is my work only judged to have value when it has reams of text attached. The value of a photograph should be in the fact that the photograph tells its own story and should be able to be enjoyed by anyone, regardless of his or her language, culture or nationality. The fact of the matter is that I see many photographs being voted for because they have endless explanations attached and essentially are no more than very basic records of day-to-day activity. The fact that these are tagged as photographs, instead of merely additions to the actual story, surely devalue the art of photography.
This leads me to further speculation that if the right person should post pretty pictures of animals doing funny things, these would be voted for as valued quality content. In my opinion, we need to step off of our soap boxes and instead of beating the quality content drum, we need to be more concerned with the labelling and tagging of content so that anyone can make a decision as to whether they wish to view this content (almost like the NSFW tag that certain people use to warn others of the possibility that their post may cause offence).
With diversity in the world, one man’s low quality content, is another’s high quality content! Depending on your state of mind, you may need to see mindless videos of kittens and puppies as this may be needed to bring yourself into a state of mind where you can continue with your life’s purpose.
Does this then need to be down voted by people who do not understand or can we avoid the negativity that seems to be prevalent on this platform and let people view what they want.
Let us rather use our votes and comments to uplift that which we believe is valuable to ourselves.
