Cover of the July 2005 issue of Maximum PC

Maximum PC (and 'boot' before it) was my favorite PC magazine. It was a sister magazine to Mac Addict and both were enthusiast magazines for their respective platforms. The July 2005 issue of Maximum PC includes:

Regulars

  • In/Out - Letters from readers about anti-spam products, Folding@home, SLI and the Intel 955X chipset, Creative Labs Audigy 2 soundcard and Logitech's Z-5500 speakers, water cooling, and more.

  • Quick Start - BTX form factor arrives with DELL and Gateway being among the first to adopt (this form factor failed badly); hybrid notebook drives arrive with up to 1 GB of flash memory combined with a standard hard drive; digital vs. film photography; HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray, info about Longhorn (Microsoft's next OS); Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory; broadcast flag copy-protection scheme rejected by courts; Dothan based mini-PCs from AOpen; and more.

  • Head2Head - A comparison of two multi-protocol IM clients, Trillian Pro 3.1 and Gaim 1.2.1.

  • WatchDog - Quicken's sunsetting policy, sites selling pirated software, and more.

  • How To... - A guide to making DVD menus.

  • Ask the Doctor - Questions answered about deleting Wild Tangent software, securely deleting flash drives, hard drive sizes, MSN Messenger, repairing Winsock, upgrading a Dell 4550, boot times, and more.

  • In the Lab - Troubleshooting SATA optical drive support.

  • Reviews - Dell XPS (Intel 3.20GHz Pentium Extreme Edition 840, 1GB DDR2, ATI RAdeon X850 XT Platinum), Asetek WaterChill Power Kit, Gigabyte GV-3D1 (dual 6600 GT video card), Hitachi 7k500 Deskstar hard drive, iRiver H10 5GB MP3 player, Dell Pocket DJ 5GB MP3 player, iPod Photo 30GB, Dell DJ 30GB, Leadtec WinFast PX6600 video card, ATI X800 XL video card, NZXT Nemesis Elite Edition computer case, Ahanix MCE601 computer case, Doom 3, Psychonauts, Lego Star Wars, Freedom Force vs. the 3rd Reich, and more.
