I liked to claim that I don't have a heart, so I could not get emotionally involved with a girl, and in extension, I would not be heartbroken. But in recent times, I have actually liked someone, but then they left, and while I would not exactly classify how I felt then as heartbroken, I took to writing. Here's what i wrote.
We watched the stars on display. Before us was an open bottle of wine, our glasses were half-filled. We sat on the grass as the breeze in the moonlight harmonized the chirping of the crickets. All was still, save for our breaths.
"Are you cold?" She asked, noticing my occasional palm rubbing.
"Yes. Unfortunately I am." I said, chuckling.
"And you wore a cardigan."
"But for it, I would have frozen to death by now..."
She took my left hand and covered it with her palms.
"...and you." I completed. She smiled.
"Your hand is so cold." She said.
"Yours aren't." I replied.
"You're a fish." She said, nudging me with her shoulder.
"And you're a hotdog." I smiled, she smiled back.
Her warmth was satisfying. I wanted to sit here for all eternity.
"I have to go." She said.
"Why? What's the problem?"
"Oh it's nothing." She dropped my hand. "We're from, and live in, two separate worlds.
" What do you mean?" I asked, confused.
"Understanding would hurt you. I don't want that..." She said, taking her glass up. "...but we're still friends. Here's to it." She raised her glass, then she took a sip of its contents.
"Don't go." is all I could mutter.
"I want to stay, but I can't."
She got up, cleaned her gown and walked away. Tears welled up in my eyes as she did. Memories flipped in my head like pages in a book, then like dust they spread out and vanished into nothing.
"Don't go." I said again, under my breath, two hours after she had left.
That's a summary of what happened. And a summary of what I felt. Was my heart broken? I have no idea.
