I walked briskly down the hallway.. My brogued Oxfords well polished shone in the sunlight. I looked smart. My Paul Smith jacket lay on my body perfectly. My gold watch glittered, my cufflinks smiled at them. The highway was long, and I was late for a meeting, again. My bowtie took me extra long to knot, as it had always done. Prior to that, I had woken up late because I stayed up all night researching our new client, the renowned Mr Agbakoba who wished to invest in the company I worked with. I headed the research team of my company, and today, I was supposed to submit a report on our intending client to the board. I had done this several times before so I was not scared.
My Chevrolet was bad. The car was an imported brand so the spare parts would require importation as well. Today, I intended to take a cab to work. So I treaded that highway to the main road, where commercial taxis loaded and offloaded passengers. My briefcase was tightly clasped in my right hand and I occasionally looked at my watch wound on my left. I could lose my job today if I let the board wait longer than expected. I sat next to the window behind the driver, a stern and disgusting old looking man. I feared the repulsion harboured by this vehicle would stain my high grade quality outfits, and I wanted out immediately. Plus, I was late.
When it got to my stop, I paid the man immediately and told him to keep the change. He thanked me, and without looking, I opened my door, completely. I went out into the main road, unaware that the driver had parked rather close in. I shut the door quickly and attempted to rush across the road, directly opposite was my office. I could see from here the parking lot filled with exotic cars, as owned by the members of the board. My heart skipped when my phone rang again and in a bid to pick it up, still in the middle of the road, I turned to see an oncoming truck.
I remember it's horn, I remember the lights flashing, warning me to leave the road. All under that split millisecond, I was crossing the road and picking my boss' call. In the next second, I found my body lying on the floor, blood oozing from my nostrils and mouth. My well starched white shirt was stained and my suit tore. Still, amidst all the frenzy caused by the accident, my smartphone rang...
