According to history, during the Stone Age, commerce started as trade by barter. It was a time whereby communities come together and exchange whatever they have among each other. Let’s say a farmer has foodstuffs, he will exchange with a hunter that has meat.
The world might have changed from what it used to be at that time when we exchanged goods between each other for survival but still yet everyone performs the job of a salesman.
Before I go on, I would like to define who a salesman is.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, ”a salesman is a person whose job is selling things in a shop or directly to customers.”
Looking at the world today, one of the growing industries in the world is the content creators. It’s a wild market more than you can imagine; the YouTuber, the TikToker, your favourite social media influencers all create content.
These creators have an audience that pays attention to them which is why they became popular. It could be the personality they give off from the way they create their content, the empathy that steam off what they do or how they do what they do, it’s an art and people will love them for different reasons. These sets of creators have decided to sell what they have, talent, skills, media hype to people which is why they are popular.
I have chosen to pick this demographic of people to drive the focal point that everyone is a salesman.
Let’s assume you got a job, you are expected to sell your knowledge, skills, and commitment to them. This is one of the major reasons why you were given the job. Even if you aren’t directly selling anything at your job post, you have assumed the role of a salesman. They are comfortable with your skills and tenacity, the reason why they gave you the job in the first place is that you are expected to sell your skills to them and they pay you your worth.
If we critically evaluate this, we would realise that it’s still a trade by barter business.
The notion that everyone is a salesman persists since we are in a modernised trade by barter era. The exchange of goods has transformed to the exchange of skills, ideas and commitment. This relationship has also gone from individuals alone now to organisations which are fundamental to your human activity.
