if there's one thing we lack hugely today in our gardens it's biodiversity. Honestly I haven't seen a hedgehog in years. With more and more land being cleared for arable farming and patches cleared for housing we have very little wild land left. The rainforest is being chopped down at an alarming rate, and in England what used to be large forests with small clearings is now field upon field of cows and sheep. Even the hedgerows between fields lacks diversity and is constantly cleared. But we can make changes starting at home to help our wildlife have a fighting chance, firstly im a huge advocate of a vegan diet for numerous environmental factors, secondly trying to eliminate unnecessary plastic waste. Thirdly and this is most certainly something we can all do, leave patches of your garden alone. We don't use pesticides or weed our garden, simply allow large arrears to grow whatever grows. It's been great to watch we have nettles, dandelions all kinds of flowers and small shrubs that pop up. The bee's and wasps certainly seem to think it's paradise and the wild bunnies enjoy it too. We now have resident pigeons and a squirrel. Most people are absolutely pedantic about that perfect length lawn with no weeds growing up, but for bugs that's taking away their little homes. So if you really must have that ideal lawn consider leaving the boardars uncut, plant some different shrubs herbs and even fruit bushes. Create bird baths and use seed feeders, make a small pond, none of these things need be expensive simply repurpose old house hold goods like storage boxes. Look into growing a few crops like brocoli that butterflys lay their eggs on. Not only is this great for the wildlife you're using less energy and chemicals harmful to our environment, it's an absolutely wonderful experience for kids to see wild animals and parts of their life cycles like seeing frog spawn develop into tadpoles. We are obsessed with sterilising everything and adding order to our environment, but when left nature creates the most beautiful places all by itself.
