I used to live just outside Tomintoul when I was very small (maybe 2?). My mum worked as a secretary/admin person at the Glenlivet distillery a few miles up the road. Our family lived in the long, single-storey white building you can glimpse through the trees. We used to use pheasant-run heaters to heat it in winter, when the snow would reach quite near the tops of the snow markers along the roads, according to my mum. I have a vague memory of swimming/paddling with my dad in the tautologically? named River Avon nearby, watched by a bunch of cows. I remember the peaty taste of the water from when I visited the area in my thirties and had to have a full-body dip in the river.
